Festivals in China

Every year China comes alive in festive seasons with people observing ceremonial activities with great fervor. Originated in distant past, the primitive festivities transformed in a series of joyous events celebrated throughout the year. Shaped by history and folklore the Festivals in China flaunts a mesmerizing blend of color, light, age old customs, entertaining programs and the spirit of Chinese people.

Chinese New Year is perhaps the most well known among the Festivals in China . Marking the end or previous year and renewed aspirations for future, the New Year usually falls in mid January or in early February. The New Year is celebrated with Dragon dancing, temple fairs and fireworks. People decorate their houses, enjoy banquet parties and present gift to welcome the new year. The 15 th day of the first lunar month is the day of Lantern Festival. Ornate lanterns of varied sizes shapes with exquisite paintings on them are hung in the streets and houses. Glowing beautifully, these lanterns are fine specimens of art, creative talent and imagination.

In the middle of the year, Dragon boats take to the water all over China . The festival is observed on the fifth day of fifth lunar month. Spectacular boat race competitions are held in rivers and lakes. Thousands of onlookers rejoice as beautifully crafted dragon boats rush on the water with the rhythm of drumbeats towards the finishing point. In symbolic level, Dragon Boat Festival indicates warding off evil spirits. On the occasion of Quxi (Double Seven) Festival, people recall the legendary love story of Niu Lang and his wife fairy Zhi Nau, their separation and reunion.

Other important Festivals in China like Quingming Festival, Spring Festival, Mid Autumn Festival and Chongyang or Double Ninth Festival are also celebrated with great enthusiasm.
